Here's a list of tools & staples you need, to get started for Baking & Cake Decorating

LIST OF BAKING ESSENTIALS


  • Measuring cups: Metal & glass for dry & liquid
  • Sets of measuring spoons
  • Mixing Bowls: Glass or Metal bowls of different sizes are recommended.
  • Cooling racks: Small & Large
  • Rolling Pins: Small & Large
  • Silicone spatulas: Different sizes
  • Offset & regular metal spatulas for frosting
  • Good surface for rolling out doughs....regular counters will do, unless you want to roll out Fondant, then you'll need a thick plastic sheet
  • Pastry brushes.
  • Pastry blender.
  • Pastry/ Pizza wheel
  • Pastry Docker for docking Pie shells or you can use a fork
  • Large & small strainers that can double as flour sifter & strainers
  • Metal Bench Knife
  • Plastic Bowl scraper
  • Long wooden skewers that can be used as cake Testers.
  • Assorted cookie cutters in different sizes and shapes
  • Pastry Bags: Disposable & Reusable
  • Variety of Tips for decorating, filling, piping choux dough or Macarons
  • Couplers to change out tips
  • Decorating Combs
  • Food colors: For colouring Fondant, Gum paste or cake batters
  • Brushes for painting on Cakes
  • Ceramic Pie weights or Dried Beans, which can be reused
  • Good kitchen scissors

  • Knives: Bread & Cake knives (are important for cakes and breads)

Here are some important STAPLES to keep on hand in your pantry:

 

  • AP flour
  • Bread flour
  • Corn Flour or Corn Starch
  • Cake flour: To make cake flour: For every cup of AP flour, take out 2 Tabsp & replace with 2 Tabsp Corn Flour & sift at least 3 times.
  • Almond Meal
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Instant Coffee
  • Dried Fruits: Raisins, Apricots, Cherries, Coconut
  • Nuts: Almond, Pistachio, Peanuts, Cashews (Need to be refrigerated)
  • Marzipan....need to be refrigerated
  • Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Flavourings or Emulsions:  Vanilla, Orange, Almond, Lemon, Red Velvet, Rum, Coffee, Pink Champagne
  • Cream of Tartar
  • Yeast: This is better to buy closer to when you need them
  • Salt
  • Sugars: Regular, Bakers & Icing
  • Brown Sugar
  • Powdered Buttermilk, for when you need a little.
  • Instant Powdered Milk, better to be refrigerated
  • Canned Milks: Evaporated, Sweetened Condensed, Coconut
  • Gelatine: Flavoured & unflavoured
  • Molasses
  • Honey
  • Corn Syrup
  • Shortening: Hi-ratio or Crisco
  • Oils: Vegetable, Canola & Peanut (for frying)
  • Poppy seeds
  • Sesame seeds
  • Spices: Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cardamom, Caraway Seeds, Mixed Spices for spice Cake etc
